What is mindon?

MindOn is a comprehensive Social & Emotional Learning (SEL) program that enhances the development potential of schools, its faculty and students by employing interactive workshops based on principles of positive psychology and resilience.

A key strength of the MindOn program lies in its ability to be adapted and customized to best fit in with your school’s existing curriculum. Schools get to make an active informed decision about how the program should be implemented according to their unique context.

“Just as some teachers try to accommodate different learning styles, it’s helpful to remember there are different social styles.”

Peter Greene

HOW SEL WORKS

Every child has her or his emotions, relationships and decision-making abilities. What social and emotional learning (SEL) does is it enables a child, and even an adult, in acquiring skills so essential to manage emotions, relationships and decisions in various spheres of life.

The need

Schools in
changing times

The world is changing rapidly and these interconnected global changes are affecting the Indian society at every level. We are compelled to adapt to newer ways to think about our environment and ourselves, both as individuals and organizations.

The education sector is significantly impacted by these changes, as it is here that children are learning to face the challenges far more complex than ever before. Schools hold the responsibility of holistic student development, however, they need to be prepared to face newer challenges every day.

Student behaviour and academic success in schools today

Schools need to cope with

  • 1. High pressure for academic results and success
  • 2. New kinds of behavioral issues and problems
  • 3. Reduced motivation to study
  • 4. Inappropriate relationships – exploitative, peer pressure, bullying, aggression
  • 5. Limited ability of teachers to effect overall development of children due to the issues above
  • 6. High expectations of parents

Student Development

An outcome of interaction among these 3 environments

School performance is a complex phenomenon, shaped by a wide variety of factors intrinsic to students and their external environment. In addition to content knowledge and academic skills, students need to develop sets of skills and strategies to succeed in the present world. Research on students in educational environments suggests that student development is facilitated through an interaction between an individual’s internal state and the social and institutional demands of parents, faculty, peers and culture. A student’s development, therefore, is directly linked to the developmental potential of the institution, which is the learning environment that is created and provided by the institution.

What is Social & Emotional Learning (SEL)?

The Five SEL Competency Clusters

  • 1. Self-Awareness: Recognizing & understanding one’s emotions and values as well as one’s strengths and challenges.
  • 2. Self-Management: Managing emotions and behaviors to achieve one’s goals.
  • 3. Social Awareness: Empathy – Understanding others around oneself, being able to view a situation from the perspective of another.
  • 4. Relationship Skills: Fostering positive relationships, working in teams, dealing effectively with conflict.
  • 5. Responsible Decision-Making: Making ethical, constructive choices about personal and social behavior.

Mindfulness: An approach to enhance SEL

Research suggests that Mindfulness is an effective approach to enhance SEL. Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally. Quite simply, Mindfulness is the art of bringing attention to our thoughts, feelings and actions as they arise from moment to moment. Mindful awareness helps children to develop concentration and self-awareness. It is proven by research that brain training involving Mindfulness practices can strengthen areas of the brain responsible for attention, emotional control and problem solving. In practice, these benefits can be obtained by regular brief sessions of structured Mindfulness practice 2 to 3 times a day.

How SEL & Mindfulness
can make a positive change

Every child has her or his emotions, relationships and decision-making abilities. What social and emotional learning (SEL) does is to enable an individual to acquire skills essential to manage emotions, relationships and decisions in various spheres of life.

What research says about SEL programming

Social and emotional skills play a role in determining how well equipped children will be to meet the demands of the classroom. They also help determine whether students are able to engage fully in learning and benefit from instruction. (Campbell & von Stauffenberg, 2008; Denham, Brown, & Domitrovich, 2010)

Extensive research demonstrates that school-based SEL programs can promote studentsconnection to school, positive behavior, and academic achievement. (Durlak et al. 2011).

The MindOn curriculum is well-structured yet adaptable at the same time. While there is flexibility in terms of how the content may be unpacked and delivered in line with varied school and classroom contexts, at the core of all our curriculum is a definite, scientific approach. This approach is guided by solid theory, empirical evidence and established principles of learning; all coming together to ensure content aimed to actualize each student’s learning potential.
